This letter from his mother in November 1939 gives the flavour of their relationship: “You are the nastiest little pig I know… It’s so sad waiting for letters that don’t come and are not even written… Don’t treat me so badly again or I’ll have your lights and liver when I get home.” And when he does finally write: “Really your letters are too horrid, one side of a sheet, not one word of affection or love. This one only told me your gym master had been ill. It was not even signed.”
